Adapting Wherever You Are… Even While Hiking the Appalachian Trail – with Jeremy Scroggins

Adaptability…

I remember deciding to have this conversation around being adaptable and what that looks like in our lives, but when I sat down to talk to Jeremy about hiking the Appalachian Trail, it took on a whole new meaning.

What kind of person willingly takes off six months of their lives to hike over 2000 miles… Jeremy Scroggins, AKA Timber.

I might be a little biased, but this is one of the most interesting and fun conversations I’ve ever had with a human. I hope you enjoy it as much as we obviously did.

We originally had this conversation in 2017.

Right now, this is the adventure.

About Jeremy Scroggins

Jeremy Scroggins

Jeremy Scroggins is the best humans on the planet. Yep, I get to say whatever I want – it’s my show!

But seriously, besides being the most amazing husband, Jeremy Scroggins finished the Appalachian Trail after six months and 10 days in September 2013. He is also an English and Creative Writing graduate of UT Austin and has a knack for uncovering, cleaning up, and showcasing the earth’s forgotten treasures. He’s currently the VP of the AMDC (Austin Metal Detecting Club) and a video editing and production specialist at Treaty Oak Distilling. Jeremy lives with me and our children (our cat children) in Texas.

Our Relationship to Time – with Dr. Dawna Ballard

Time is an ever-present character in our lives.

Two years ago, Dr. Dawna Ballard and I dove into a conversation about our different relationships to time and deconstructed how we interact with and treat time – both culturally and globally.

This was one of my all-time favorite conversations and, now, is an even more relevant topic to share.

We originally had this conversation in early 2018.

As members of a community, in our relationships, we get to decide how we will use time… our negative relationships with time comes from having forgotten that this is just a tool.

About Dr. Dawna Ballard

Dawna Ballard (Ph.D., University of California at Santa Barbara, 2002) is an expert in chronemics—the study of time as it is bound to human communication. She researches what drives our pace of life and its impact on the communication practices and longterm vitality of organizations, communities, and individuals. Her research and commentary have been featured in mainstream news outlets such as QuartzHuffington Post, PBS MediaShift, NPR, and at venues such as Creative Mornings and SXSW Interactive 2016.  In March of 2018, she spoke at SXSW Interactive on her recent research:  It’s Time: How to Find Alignment & Abandon Work-Life Balance.

SHOW NOTES

WHAT WE TALK ABOUT

  • Pacers and how they set the tone for our relationship to time every day.
  • The 24/7 lifestyle and expectations that come with that.
  • Temporal commons.
  • Honoring alignment over “work-life balance”.
  • There is nothing convenient about being human.
  • Taking back control of your time.

Featured: Creator Series

With all of the stress and confusion going on in the world right now, I thought it would be a good idea to re-purpose some of my old audio story content.

For those of you that don’t know me, you may not know that before I became a voice actor and podcast producer, I had a business called Mine Space. We won’t go into super detail about it here, but I created a complimentary podcast dedicated to outlining human emotion and having conversations with people in my life.

During this time in my life, my husband and I were living in an RV on the coast of Oregon while he worked at the Bureau of Land Management. So, you know, when the husband’s away – make a podcast! I’m a  huge fan of Jad Abumrad’s production style with Radiolab, so I took some time to emulate my podcast, and the conversations I had, after what he does in his shows.

I still go back and listen to these stories and discussions with my friends and family members because they truly moved me.

My audio chops have come a long way, but it’s fun and interesting to go back and hear how I did things three years ago.

But from an online content creator perspective, re-purposing content is super useful and important for making your old content work for your business. And these discussions are super relevant to what’s going on in the world right now. Plus, it reminds me of all the creativity inside of me, and hopefully listening to these will do the same for you.
